IMPROVING ORAL HEALTH WITH TOOTH RESTORATIONS

Are you familiar with your options for repairing any form of dental damage? If you do suffer from dental damage, whether it be a chipped or cracked tooth, stains or discolorations, a cavity, or if simply wish to improve the appearance of your teeth, our dentist can offer a variety of restorations to give you the oral health and smile you desire. Some of the most common and effective dental restorations include dental crowns, dental fillings, dental veneers and teeth whitening treatments, each of which can drastically improve the condition of your smile.

If you’re suffering from a situation in which a cavity is present, you run the risk of eventual tooth loss. Cavities are formed when there are holes in your tooth enamel. If left untreated, bacteria can potentially infect the tooth and cause the inner pulp to die. To effectively treat a cavity, a dental filling will be required.

Teeth whitening treatments, especially professional treatments from our dentist, can cosmetically enhance your smile by removing stains and discolorations and improving the natural color of your teeth. Teeth whitening treatments vary in effectiveness, so speak with our dentist for product recommendations and suggestions.

If a tooth needs an additional layer of protection beyond what tooth enamel can provide, dental crowns can be effective. Because crowns can be customized in look and shape, they can improve the tooth’s protection against further damage.

If you wish to cover up imperfections on the front of a tooth, dental veneers can be an effective treatment. Veneers provide a minimal amount of protection but can drastically improve the look of your teeth.

Your smile and your oral health care can receive a boost with tooth restorations. If you wish to visit the dental office of Bishop Family Dental in Salt Lake City, Utah, you can book an exam by calling us at 801-274-2500. Dr. Daniel Bishop and our entire team look forward to providing you with the repairs and care you need.

YOU KNOW THE DRILL

Fear of the Dentist is not uncommon. Some of the most dreaded words to be heard at a dentist office are Root Canal. But now there are new technologies available to allow for shorter procedure time and less discomfort. Common causes for a root canal are a cracked tooth, deep cavity or repeated trauma to the tooth. Root Canal means cleaning the canals inside the tooth.

If your Salt Lake City Root Canal Dentist recommends the procedure it will involve removing the damaged portion of the tooth, cleaning, disinfecting it, then filling and sealing it. This naturally can be a scary thought and finding the Salt Lake City Best Dentist to help ease your fears is now easier than ever.

At Bishop Family Dental, our staff is willing to answer any questions you may have to minimize the surprise. You will have a choice of anxiety-reducing options such as hundreds of movies, TV and radio programs or if needed a strong Topical may be used. We even have a Dental Anesthesiologist that can help them to be asleep during their procedure. In some cases, we can also use our laser so they don’t have to hear the sound of the drill or feel the vibrations.

Please contact our office and we will happy to help put a calming plan into action.

HOW CAN CEREC® ENHANCE MY DENTAL CROWN EXPERIENCE?

HOW CAN CEREC® ENHANCE MY DENTAL CROWN EXPERIENCE?

    Dr. Bishop  |  Dec 8 2017, 06:22 AM  |  0 Comments

HOW CAN CEREC® ENHANCE MY DENTAL CROWN EXPERIENCE?

CEREC® is an advanced dental technology tool that can quickly restore a damaged or weakened smile with a same-day dental restoration such as a veneer, crown, inlay, or onlay. This equipment uses a high-quality dental material to create these dental restorations in the course of a single day. If you need a dental crown to treat a weakened, discolored, or broken tooth, we invite you to consider the benefits of CEREC technology.

When you choose a CEREC crown to restore your smile, you can receive the restoration during your initial appointment, while traditional dental crowns take a few days or weeks so that your dentist can create an impression of your tooth, submit it to a dental lab, and wait for the lab to complete the crown. Due to the advanced efficiency of CEREC, you can receive your oral exam and your dental crown within one visit.

CEREC is a high-tech computer system that uses digital images of your smile to design and create a permanent dental crown. The special software also allows our dentist to custom design the dental crown to match the proper color and shape of your smile. In many cases, CEREC dental crowns are also stronger than other types of crowns.

If you are interested in learning more about the benefits of CEREC dental technology, call Bishop Family Dental at 801-274-2500 today. Dr. Daniel Bishop and our team would be happy to help you determine if a CEREC dental crown in Salt Lake City, Utah, is right for you!

Five Common Reasons for Tooth Extraction

Five Common Reasons for Tooth Extraction

      Daniel Bishop  |  Nov 1 2023, 01:46 AM  |  0 Comments

      Dental teeth cleaning

While preserving our natural teeth is always the goal, there are times when tooth extraction becomes necessary. In this blog post, we will explore five common reasons why a tooth may need to be extracted. From severe decay and impacted wisdom teeth to infections and orthodontic preparation, understanding these causes can help us appreciate the importance of maintaining good oral hygiene. So let's dive in and uncover the factors that might lead us down the path of tooth extraction – but fear not! Our focus is on prevention and education for optimal dental care.

      Common Reasons for Tooth Extraction:

      • Severe Decay or Damage

One of the most common reasons for tooth extraction is severe decay or damage. This occurs when a tooth is extensively decayed and cannot be restored with a filling, crown, or other dental treatment. In some cases, the decay may have reached the pulp of the tooth, causing infection and pain. To prevent further complications and alleviate discomfort, extraction becomes necessary.

      • Impacted Wisdom Teeth

Another reason for tooth extraction is impacted wisdom teeth. These are third molars that do not have enough space to fully emerge or grow in proper alignment with the rest of your teeth. Impacted wisdom teeth can lead to various issues such as pain, swelling, infection, crowding of surrounding teeth, and even damage to adjacent structures like jawbone or nerves.

      • Infection and Abscess

When an infection reaches the root tip of a tooth or forms an abscess at its base due to untreated decay or trauma, extraction might be recommended to prevent spreading of bacteria throughout your mouth and body. Infections can cause severe pain and may also pose risks to your overall health if left untreated.

      • Crowding of Teeth

Sometimes orthodontic treatment requires extracting one or more teeth to create sufficient space for shifting misaligned teeth into their correct positions. When there isn't enough room in your mouth for all your permanent teeth due to genetic factors or natural growth patterns (such as small jaw), extractions can help align your bite properly.

      • Preparation for Orthodontic Treatment

Extractions are sometimes performed as part of orthodontic treatment plans where overcrowded mouths need some removals before braces installation takes place; this allows better alignment during realignment process by providing adequate spacing between existing dentition so they can shift gradually into desired location without impeding each other's movement.

      Conclusion

Tooth extraction is a common dental procedure that may be necessary for various reasons. From severe decay and damage to overcrowding and preparing for orthodontic treatment, there are several factors that can lead to the need for tooth removal.

Maintaining good oral hygiene practices, such as regular brushing, flossing, and visiting your dentist regularly, can help prevent some of these issues. However, if you do find yourself in a situation where tooth extraction is necessary, it's important not to panic or feel overwhelmed. Remember that advancements in dentistry have made the process more comfortable and efficient than ever before. Your dentist will take all necessary precautions to ensure a smooth experience with minimal discomfort.

If you suspect any signs of severe decay or damage in your teeth or notice symptoms such as pain or swelling in the gum area, don't hesitate to schedule an appointment with your dentist. They will assess your condition and recommend the most suitable course of action. In cases involving impacted wisdom teeth or crowding of teeth, early intervention can help prevent further complications down the line. By removing these problem teeth proactively, you can achieve better oral health overall.

Every patient's situation is unique when it comes to tooth extraction. It's crucial to consult with your dentist, who will provide personalized advice based on your specific needs and circumstances.

So remember: while tooth extraction may seem daunting at first glance, it can actually be a step towards improving your oral health and overall well-being. Trust in your dental professional's expertise and embark on this journey knowing that they have your best interests at heart.

Take care of those pearly whites – after all, they play an essential role in maintaining a healthy smile!

WHAT TO EXPECT WITH A CHIPPED TOOTH

WHAT TO EXPECT WITH A CHIPPED TOOTH

      Dr. Bishop  |  Jan 12 2018, 06:14 AM  |  0 Comments

WHAT TO EXPECT WITH A CHIPPED TOOTH

From everyday roughhousing to out-of-the-blue accidents, a chipped tooth can be hard to avoid. Sometimes uncomfortable, a chipped tooth can feel jagged and make biting difficult, and may also affect your confidence in talking or smiling with your teeth. A chipped tooth shouldn’t stop you from smiling, and the professionals at Bishop Family Dental are here to help.

The first thing to remember is to stay calm. Chipping a tooth is common for both children and adults, and depending on the severity of the chip, it can be a simple fix. You should assess the situation, then call the dentist as soon as possible to schedule a time to come in. The sooner you can take care of the chipped tooth, the better off it will be. If you’re experiencing discomfort because of the chipped tooth, be sure to tell us when you call, so we can plan accordingly.

Depending on how badly chipped the tooth (or teeth) may be, there are several options available. A tiny chip that doesn’t require filling or shaping can be lightly filed down until it is once again smooth. A bigger, deeper chip may require dental bonding. If dental bonding is used, the bonding material will be molded on to the chipped tooth to fill in the area where the tooth is missing. The bonded material is then smoothed and shaped to match your tooth.

If a chip is severe enough, filing and dental bonding may not be the best option. In this case, alternative treatments can be discussed with Dr. Daniel Bishop. Chipping a tooth is never a welcome surprise, but here at Bishop Family Dental, we strive to help with all of your emergency dental needs. Feel free to call us at 801-274-2500, or stop by next time you’re in Salt Lake City, Utah.

TREATING AN INJURED LIP OR TONGUE

TREATING AN INJURED LIP OR TONGUE

        Dr. Bishop  |  May 24 2018, 06:45 AM  |  0 Comments

TREATING AN INJURED LIP OR TONGUE

Not every accident in life is a major one, but even minor accidents can cause problems for your oral health. A slip in the kitchen, a fall on the playground or even a minor fender-bender can result in a cut to the lip or tongue.

To avoid an injury to your mouth, you should wear a custom mouth guard when playing sports, or if you have a job that could result in an oral injury. Playground safety, mopping up spills, and clearing your home of trip hazards can help prevent injuries. And of course, wearing your seatbelt can help keep your mouth safe if you are on the road.

If you do sustain an injury to your mouth, you should call our dentist, Dr. Daniel Bishop and let him know. The dentist will let you know if you need to come in for treatment. In the meantime, you can clean your lips with a mild soap water solution, and if needed, rinse your mouth with a solution of water and salt, or a one-to-one mixture of water and peroxide. To stop the bleeding, apply pressure to the injury. You can use an ice pack or cold pack to reduce any swelling.

If the injury is severe, the wound is deep or the bleeding will not stop, then you should go to the emergency room before seeking treatment from the dentist. If you have sustained an injury to the lip or tongue, once it is under control, it’s a good idea to make an appointment to see us at Bishop Family Dental. If you would like to schedule your visit, call 801-274-2500 today.

ORAL SURGERY CAN BE USED IN TREATING GUM DISEASE

ORAL SURGERY CAN BE USED IN TREATING GUM DISEASE

          Dr. Bishop  |  Apr 19 2016, 12:58 AM  |  0 Comments

ORAL SURGERY CAN BE USED IN TREATING GUM DISEASE

Gum disease is an inflammation of the gums. It occurs when plaque and tartar buildup on the teeth and under the gums. Plaque and tartar contain bacteria that infect the gums. The infection causes swelling, bleeding, and redness of the gums.

          What Is Gum Disease?

Gum disease, or periodontitis, is a chronic inflammatory disease that affects the gum tissue and bone supporting the teeth. If left untreated, periodontal disease can progress to involve the underlying bone, which can erode and loosen the teeth. When severe, teeth may eventually fall out or have to be removed.

Both gingivitis and periodontitis are caused by bacterial plaque buildup around and below the gum line. Plaque hardens into tartar both above and below the gum line, which irritates the gums and causes them to bleed more easily. The bacteria in plaque also make your gums more prone to infection.

Common symptoms of gum disease include red, swollen, tender gums that may bleed during brushing or flossing. You may also notice persistent bad breath or a bad taste in your mouth. Pain around a tooth when biting down is another common sign of gum disease. Gum disease is most common in adults in their 30s and 40s, though it can affect people of all ages.

If left untreated, gum disease can lead to a range of serious health concerns. Some of the most common signs and symptoms of gum disease include:

          • Bleeding while brushing or flossing
          • Discoloration of the gums, meaning the tissue is red, swollen, and bleeds easily (inflamed)
          • Pus around the tooth
          • Receding gums
          • Soreness or tenderness of the gum tissues when touched or brushed
          • Bad breath that doesn’t go away with brushing
          • Loosening of a tooth
          • Permanent tooth sensitivity that results from gum recession
          • Facial swelling
          • Painful chewing
          • Teeth shifting out of position
          • Pockets of pus developing between the teeth and gums
          • Infections from abscesses in the teeth or gums
          • Formation of cysts in the mouth
          • Progression to tooth loss

These symptoms can be mild or severe. Treatment for gum disease can range from moderate scaling and root planing to extractions.

          Treatment of Gum Disease

Gum disease occurs when plaque builds up on the teeth, causing inflammation of the gums and bleeding of gum tissue. Untreated gingivitis can lead to more serious forms of gum disease, such as periodontitis or advanced periodontitis. Periodontitis affects approximately 47% of adults in the United States. The stages of gum disease begin with swelling and redness of the gums and progress to bleeding, receding gums, and the development of deep pockets between the teeth and gums. This can allow bacteria to build up under the gum line, increasing the risk of tooth decay and further infection.

If left untreated, periodontal treatment may be necessary to repair damage and restore dental health. Root planing and scaling is a common treatment for the early stages of gum disease, while more advanced cases may require gum surgery or even bone and tissue grafts to promote healing of the gums and surrounding tissues. Dental lasers can also be used to reduce pain and speed up the healing process following gum surgery.

          Most Common Dental Emergencies

          Most Common Dental Emergencies

          Dr. Bishop  |  Mar 16 2022, 07:41 AM  |  0 Comments

          Most Common Dental Emergencies

A dental emergency is any urgent situation involving the mouth, teeth, gums, and surrounding facial areas. It can be painful and frightening, but emergency dental care is available.

If you experience a dental emergency, then it’s important to get treatment as soon as possible. However, before you pick up the phone to make an appointment, you should assess the situation and determine if you need immediate care.

          Common dental emergencies include:

          Toothache

A toothache can be a sign of a serious dental emergency. Throbbing pain in the mouth can be a sign of an infection in the pulp. The pulp of a tooth is the inner layer that contains the nerves and blood vessels.

An infection of the pulp can be very painful. A variety of problems can cause a toothache, including:

          • Tooth decay
          • Cavities
          • Broken teeth
          • Injury to the mouth
          • Gum disease

If you experience a toothache, please try to see the dentist as soon as possible. The sooner dental professionals can treat the problem, the better.

          Tooth Damage

If a dental emergency causes tooth damage, Dr. Bishop will need to repair the tooth. If a crown, veneer, or other restoration is broken or knocked out entirely, it will need to be repaired or replaced as soon as possible. Dr. Bishop can repair damaged restorations in most cases.

          Broken Tooth

Although a broken tooth can be caused by trauma, it most often occurs due to a fracture in the tooth’s outer layer. This can be caused by biting down on a hard or sticky substance, such as ice, or from a fall.

A broken tooth should be treated as soon as possible. The dentist may repair the tooth with a crown or a filling. If the tooth is broken below the gum line, the dentist will first need to perform a root canal.

          Loose Tooth

A loose tooth can be the result of an injury, decay, or normal wear and tear. Even if the tooth is loose, it should still be treated as soon as possible. Leaving the tooth untreated can lead to complications such as increased pain, swelling, and infection.

A loose tooth may need a splint or crown. A splint may be used to hold the tooth in place. A crown is a cap that fits over the entire tooth. This covers the tooth to prevent further damage and infections.

          Chipped or Cracked Tooth

A chipped or cracked tooth can quickly lead to pain, sensitivity, and a higher risk of tooth decay. Fortunately, a dental professional can often repair the damaged tooth with a filling, crown, or veneer.

A crown or veneer will restore the appearance and function of your tooth, while a filling will prevent further decay. In the case of a cracked tooth, a filling or crown will not be sufficient, and your dentist will likely recommend a root canal.

          Knocked Out Tooth

If you wake up one morning and find that one of your teeth has been knocked out, do not panic. Your dentist can usually put it back in place. However, you will need to see the dentist as soon as possible.

Your tooth is a delicate structure that requires adequate blood supply and stimulation to remain viable. When a filling or crown is dislodged, the tooth is still attached to the jawbone. This means that, in most cases, your dentist can attach the restoration to the tooth. However, if the tooth has been knocked out of the socket, your dentist needs to replace it as soon as possible. Otherwise, the gum and bone tissue will begin to deteriorate, and the tooth may not be able to be restored.

If you’re experiencing dental discomfort, or if you think you may have a dental emergency, call us right away.

          Object Caught Between Teeth

An object caught between teeth can be extremely painful and can cause damage to the teeth. If a tooth is knocked out, it will need to be reset and may need a crown. For an object caught in the tooth, it may be possible to remove the object with dental floss. If it isn’t possible to remove the object with dental floss, the object can be removed with dental forceps. If the object is too large, it can require a dental procedure.

          TAKING THE SUMMER BREAK LITERALLY?

You are at a Summer BBQ and you decide to use your teeth as a bottle opener….snap OUCH…now what?

You will first need to contact a Salt Lake City Emergency Dentist who will then determine if a Cap also known as a Cosmetic Crown is appropriate. The Dentist may refer you to a local Salt Lake City Crown Dentist or a Salt Lake City Cap Dentist.

However, if you contact us at Bishop Family Dental not only can we help in an Emergency as a Salt Lake City Same Day Dentist but we can often help repair your tooth in one day. Many dentists will apply a temporary crown/cap and will have you return for another appointment. At our office we have the technology to repair the tooth and have a permanent crown applied in the same visit. A computerized image of the tooth is created along with the exact dimensions and blueprint for what the new restoration should look like. Our CEREC® system will effectively print the restoration and can be used to create crowns, veneers, inlays and onlays, in our office while your tooth is being prepared. A great option for fixing your smile is to choose a tooth crown/ cap and with Bishop Family Dental you can get back to your BBQ in no time.
