Dental Anxiety

At Bishop Family Dental, we specialize in treating patients who have dental anxiety. If you have been avoiding the dentist because of fear of a painful procedure or because you do not enjoy having dental work done, give us a call. In our Salt Lake City, Utah, dental office, we can ensure that you are comfortable and relaxed regardless of what procedure is being performed. When you visit our office, Dr. Daniel Bishop will discuss what treatments you need and formulate a plan for how to maintain your oral health while easing your fears about dentistry or procedures in general. This way, you will know what to expect and become empowered to make decisions regarding dental care without feeling any anxiety.

HOW CAN I OVERCOME MY FEAR OF DENTAL PROCEDURES WITHOUT MEDICATION?

When you visit our 84124 dental office, we can discuss ways that you can prevent experiencing anxiety while receiving dental care. Aside from the medication that we can provide, you can try drinking a glass of tea to help you relax. There are several natural tea varieties that could relax and calm you that you can buy at the health foods store. Some patients also find meditation and acupuncture helps relieve their fears.

HOW CAN I PREPARE FOR MY DENTIST APPOINTMENT?

Another easy way to calm your fears is to visit our Salt Lake City dental office and meet with Dr. Daniel Bishop without having actual dental work performed. Touring our office and sitting in the dentist chair to have a conversation enables you to become familiar with our staff and office environment. This way, when you undergo dental procedures like having your teeth cleaned, you are doing so in a familiar and comfortable place facilitated by friendly and familiar faces. During your consultation, we can also discuss how your procedure will be conducted and what you can expect from it. This will help you to mentally prepare for the time it will take, the dental tools that will be used, what you could feel during the procedure, and what the recovery period will be, if any. At Bishop Family Dental, we have found that the more informed our patients are the more comfortable and relaxed they feel. This one appointment can help you overcome your fear of dentists.

DENTAL ANXIETY

Sedation Dentistry Can Reduce Your Dental Anxiety In our Salt Lake City dental office, we practice sedation dentistry that can be used to reduce and prevent dental anxiety. Here are some frequently asked questions about sedation dentistry:

WILL I BE ASLEEP WHEN SEDATED?

Typically not. Sleep dentistry is usually used only during oral surgery and lengthy procedures. Sedation dentistry can help you relax and make you drowsy. So, while you might nod off, you are technically not asleep.

CAN EVERYONE USE SEDATION DENTISTRY?

To determine if you are healthy enough for sedation (most people are), we recommend that you schedule an appointment with our Utah dental office. Dr. Daniel Bishop will discuss the type of sedation that would best suit your procedure and the level of dental anxiety that you are experiencing.

HOW IS SEDATION DENTISTRY ADMINISTERED?

The most common sedation method is taking a pill about one hour before the procedure. One pill could make you feel completely relaxed and eliminate your fear of dentists. Most procedures like teeth cleaning or filling of a cavity do not hurt much, thus many people do not require additional medication beyond sedation. However, if you need some pain medication as well, we can provide it to you after the sedation has taken effect.

WILL I BE ABLE TO MOVE AROUND NORMALLY?

Yes, you can continue to engage in conversation and respond to commands while sedated, though your response times may be slightly delayed and your mind would not be as clear. This is why we strongly recommend that you either have someone drive you home after the treatment or wait until the sedation has worn off completely before driving.

ARE THERE ANY SIDE EFFECTS OF SEDATION DENTISTRY?

Most of the time, sedation wears off within an hour of the completion of your procedure. However, if you were sedated more heavily or put to sleep for oral surgery, it could take a couple of hours for the sedation to wear off. These instances are rare, though. In our Salt Lake City dental office, we use the least amount of sedation to help you to feel completely relaxed and comfortable so that it is effective without staying in your system for too long.

CAN CHILDREN BENEFIT FROM SEDATION DENTISTRY?

Yes, children typically need sedation when a lot of dental work needs to be done. Sedation helps them hold still long enough for the work to be completed. However, this is a specialized procedure that is not offered at every dentist office.

ARE THERE OTHER WAYS OF MAKING DENTAL WORK MORE COMFORTABLE?

Yes, and one of them is laser dentistry, which is elevating how dental procedures are being done. When you have your dental treatments done at our 84124 dental office, be assured that we will use the latest technology available to make your procedure more painless and comfortable. Lasers enable us to do so because the laser beam is precise and can target small spaces without affecting any surrounding tissues. This reduces discomfort and the recovery time. Lasers are also less invasive than conventional dental instruments, causing less bleeding and swelling. They can be used in treating tooth decay and gum disease and in restorative procedures. If you want to be more comfortable while being treated, reduce your dental anxiety, or simply learn about the procedures that we perform using lasers, call Bishop Family Dental at 801-274-2500 and schedule an appointment with Dr. Daniel Bishop. At Bishop Family Dental, we have found that when lasers are used, many of our patients no longer need sedation or pain medication because the common factors that create fear of dentists are eliminated. For example, the heat, noise, and vibration traditionally associated with the dental drill aren’t experienced when using lasers.
