WHAT TO EXPECT WITH A CHIPPED TOOTH

WHAT TO EXPECT WITH A CHIPPED TOOTH

From everyday roughhousing to out-of-the-blue accidents, a chipped tooth can be hard to avoid. Sometimes uncomfortable, a chipped tooth can feel jagged and make biting difficult, and may also affect your confidence in talking or smiling with your teeth. A chipped tooth shouldn’t stop you from smiling, and the professionals at Bishop Family Dental are here to help.

The first thing to remember is to stay calm. Chipping a tooth is common for both children and adults, and depending on the severity of the chip, it can be a simple fix. You should assess the situation, then call the dentist as soon as possible to schedule a time to come in. The sooner you can take care of the chipped tooth, the better off it will be. If you’re experiencing discomfort because of the chipped tooth, be sure to tell us when you call, so we can plan accordingly.

Depending on how badly chipped the tooth (or teeth) may be, there are several options available. A tiny chip that doesn’t require filling or shaping can be lightly filed down until it is once again smooth. A bigger, deeper chip may require dental bonding. If dental bonding is used, the bonding material will be molded on to the chipped tooth to fill in the area where the tooth is missing. The bonded material is then smoothed and shaped to match your tooth.

If a chip is severe enough, filing and dental bonding may not be the best option. In this case, alternative treatments can be discussed with Dr. Daniel Bishop. Chipping a tooth is never a welcome surprise, but here at Bishop Family Dental, we strive to help with all of your emergency dental needs.
